Office Location: Bismarck, ND
Primary responsibilities will vary, but generally consist of on-site construction observation and inspection, assistance in gathering field/site information and construction staking, project record keeping, data entry, printing, filing and document preparation. Utilizing or developing CADD skills will depend on project need and candidate’s existing skill set. Interns will work in a team environment and report to a Project Manager or Senior Engineer. Travel and out of town stays may be required.
Qualification Requirements:
- High School diploma or equivalent is required.
- Pursuing or has obtained BS Degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Construction Engineering or applicable discipline.
- Years of Experience 0-3; or applicable construction experience.
- Solid written and verbal skills. Must be able to interact with people at all levels and communicate effectively.
- General knowledge using Microsoft Windows/Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- General knowledge of CADD software such as AutoCAD or Civil 3D considered a plus, but not required.
- Valid Driver’s License is required, or the ability to obtain one.
- Ability to sit and operate a computer under normal ergonomic office conditions.
- Required to work in an outdoors environment and spend extended time around construction activities.
- May require prolonged periods of standing and walking to perform some of the typical tasks and duties associated with construction observation and surveying.
- Required to lift objects or containers weighing 50-lbs.
- Become familiar with project plans, specifications and the role of the engineer/inspector in the field as the owner’s representative.
- Candidate shall communicate and confirm their understanding of project details, construction methods by contractors, acceptance testing, and evaluation of field conditions with project engineers / managers.
- Communicate with supervisor/project manager on a consistent basis to provide updates on construction progress or issues in the field.
- Assist with construction observation of contractor’s work and inspect materials before and during installation.
- Write reports on field observations of construction activities by contractors and materials testing.
- Take haul tickets from asphalt, concrete and gravel trucking operators and track quantities for payment.
- Data entry of quantities into computer record keeping systems and spreadsheets.
- Assist with construction staking and willing to become familiar with and operate survey equipment.
- Communicate with contractors and effectively deal with confrontational situations with contractors.
- Understand and follow company employee handbook and mandated safety policies.
- Perform responsibilities in a conscientious, legal and ethical manner with a strong attention to detail.
- Utilize adequate math skills to calculate areas, volumes and distances.
- Attend company, team and client meetings as needed.
- Travel and out of town stays will likely be required; may work overtime especially during the construction season.
